Katerina Hatzikidi (DPhil, Oxon) is a social anthropologist at the University of Tübingen, where she previously integrated the ERC PACT project (2020-2025). Her work explores political and social transformations with a special country focus on Brazil. While at Tübingen, she was also the PI of a research project on anticommunism in Brazil, funded by the University’s Excellence Strategy.
In 2023, she was Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IFCS/UFRJ). Among other publications, Katerina has co-edited the volumes The faces of authoritarianism and strategies of dissent in contemporary Brazil (UCL Press, 2025), Populism and conspiracy theory. Case studies and theoretical perspectives (Routledge, 2024), and A horizon of (im)possibilities: A chronicle of Brazil’s conservative turn (London University Press, 2021). Her monograph Conservatism and Conspiracism in Brazil. A Time of Awakening is forthcoming with Routledge.
Relevant publications
Across my work, I analyse how imagination and political engagement shape one another, paying particular attention to questions of morality, affect, diversity and identity, and to how the personal and the collective intertwine. My work engages with and contributes to the emerging field of conspiracy theory studies in anthropology, including work on anti-communism.
