ACTOR (Association of Conspiracy Theory Researchers) is a non-profit learned society currently being established to support interdisciplinary research on conspiracy theories and related domains. The association brings together academics, students, and educators interested in the critical study of conspiracy theories as social, political, cultural, and psychosocial phenomena.

Mission and rationale

ACTOR is founded on the recognition that conspiracy theories play an increasingly central role in contemporary social and political life. The erosion of trust in democratic institutions, combined with the rise of conspiracy beliefs, poses significant challenges to democratic discourse, political participation, and collective decision-making. ACTOR approaches conspiracy theories as key objects of scholarly inquiry, offering insights into broader social mechanisms operating within and beyond the political realm.

Governance and Structure

ACTOR is being developed as a democratic and open association. The association is expected to be governed by an elected Executive Body consisting of a Chairperson and a Steering Committee initially composed of five members. All members will be eligible to stand for election, with elections held every four years.

Academic Organisation (Working groups)

ACTOR’s academic activities are intended to be organised through Thematic Working Groups. These groups will provide a framework for focused interdisciplinary collaboration and, in the long term, are expected to be represented within the Steering Committee
